Description: Bodhi Leaf is proud to have worked with Carlos Montero and his family for over 5 years now. Carlos has expressed an immense passion for sustainability at the farm level and achieving high cup quality. Carlos hosts classes for other coffee growers in the area to help improve the quality of their coffee and the treatment of the coffee plants and soil.
For over three generations the Montero family has been producing coffee in the stunning mountains of Tarrazú, Costa Rica. Sitting at an altitude of 1,500-2,100m the Tarrazú region is rich in volcanic soil and known to offer the best of Costa Rican Coffee.
Rafael Montero and Emilia Picado began the coffee legacy. Their son Eli Montero would work throughout his childhood in coffee, and so would his son, Carlos Montero. Their passion for coffee ran through their veins, but it was impossible to ignore the hardships in the coffee business.
And while Carlos watched his father struggle, he set out to create opportunities for himself as well as the farm.
In 1971 Carlos participated in a high school exchange program in San Diego. He would leave his small town, El Llano de La Piedra to live in Southern California. He gained experiences and friendships that would last a lifetime and forever change his approach to coffee.
Carlos holds his time abroad in the US as well as Europe very near to him until this day. His favorite things about working with coffee is the connection he gets to make with people from all over the world. He absolutely loves hosting coffee lovers from all walks of life at his home and sharing his coffee culture with them.
Today, Carlos and his entire family are deeply involved at Don Eli Coffee farm. Every year, the Montero family is focused on delivering the best of what Costa Rican soils have to offer.
