Description: Urara is a new sub-section of the Colbran Coffeelands Estate in the Eastern highlands of Papua New Guinea (PNG), Coffeelands has not only a really great name, but quite a unique story behind it. In 1963, Ben Colbran, a New Zealand native moved to PNG with his wife, Norma, and their three children, Jill, Sandra, and Nichol. Colbran purchased a farm upon his arrival, and quickly used the farm to grow fruits and vegetables to make money quickly. He slowly saved enough to uproot the produce on the farm, and began planting coffee — what he had dreamed of growing all along! Ben sold the farm in 1979 and moved to Australia, but his son, Nichol decided to stay on the farm and work as the farm’s manager under the new owners. In 1997, Nichol bought the farm back, and has been the owner and director of the farm since then.

Meticulous separation for quality control helps maintain the high quality of the estate’s coffee. After careful sorting, cherry is pulped on disk pulpers. Then it dry-ferments in vats for approximately 36 hours. Water is pumped into the vats in a circular motion to naturally agitate the coffee and remove any remaining mucilage. Coffee is then sundried on tarps, where it is turned regularly to ensure even drying. After processing this coffee is sorted to an AX grade which is a standard for screen sizes between 14 and 17.

The Colbran Family, and specifically Nichol, has put in quite the effort into the Coffeelands Estate, and it shows on the cupping table. This is one of the cleanest washed coffees we’ve tasted from PNG, it has characteristics reminiscent to some coffees from Panama. We get Dark Chocolate and Orgeat (sweet almond), with a brightness of fresh Citrus, and finishes sweet and delicate like like a Floral Honey.

PNG Green

This is a terrific coffee. And MUCH better than the dark roasted PNG beans I bought when I was in Port Moresby! I just roasted the last of the two lbs I ordered as we have just loved this. I do medium to very slightly dark roast; makes great espresso and pour overs too. Yes, I'll buy it again.

farm to cup

We get our beans from the farms and roast coffee daily. We truly are farm to cup.
