Description: The township was founded in 1713 by indigenous leader named Julio Chigua. Tambo, in quechua. Historians write that the statue of Jesus de Nazareno, or Señor del Tambo was brought by travelers which were coming from Ecuador on foot on the way to Cali.. They stopped in El Tambo to rest, and when they wanted to continue the trip north, they could not lift the statue.. so they left it there and built the cathedral 100 years ago, where this statue still exists.
Today El Tambo is a thriving agricultural (coffee) municipality, situated between 1,750 and 2,000 meters above sea level. It is ideal for growing coffee due to its altitude, volcanic soil (nearby Volcan Galeras), and mild temperatures. The varieties which predominate are Castillo, and Caturra. All of the above conditions and microclimates are similar for those of Matitui.
