Description: El Zopilote is a very small, very remote farm in the Guinope area of Central Honduras. Roger Orlando Padilla Figueroa farms about 1.5 hectares of land at El Zopilote, sitting at 1,350 meters above sea level. In 2013, Figueroa planted his entire farm with the Lempira variety for its suitability to Zopilote’s climate and soil. Before planting his farm with coffee, Roger was farming potatoes, but was forced to change when a plague wiped out his entire farm. El Zopilote’s remoteness meant that he sold his coffee on the local market up until 2018. Roger had a 2 day trip to reach a town where he could sell his crop. In 2018 he was visited by LIFT agronomists, a group who identifies growers with quality terroir, and provides training and technical assistance to take a producer to the into the specialty world of coffee quality. With this training, Roger and his wife, Edis Zulema Fonseca, are producing coffee that is well into the specialty range of quality. This lot is one of our top scoring naturals to land this year, it’s impressively vibrant and dynamic. The coffee arrived tasting like Cordial Cherry (think Queen Anne’s, milk chocolate filled with creamy goodness and sweet cherry), Peach Cobbler, and Malted Chocolate.
