Description: This natural lot comes from our top scoring cooperative in Sumatra this season. We had their washed lot earlier in the season, and we’re blown away with this natural lot! It tastes vibrantly of Blackberry, Rum Cake, Vanilla Frosting, and even reminds us of that sugary candy, Turkish Delight (made of dates and nuts).

Asman Arianto has been living and working in Aceh Tengah since 1998, after moving from South Sumatra. Many workers in the region are migrant who were forced out of Sinabung Berastagi, after a dormant volcano became continuously active. After moving to the area Asman knew he wanted to get involved in coffee, but it wasn’t until 2018 that he formed the Ribang Gayo Musara Cooperative. He formed this crop with the goal of offering competitive prices to farmers so that they could reinvest into their farms and improve life for their families.

Farmers are eligible for a number of benefits when working with Asman. These benefits include that competitive price that is paid to farmers for their cherries. Second is end-of-season premiums, which is essentially profit sharing after given after the high-quality lots sell at premiums to green buyers. Lastly, the cooperative offers it’s members training in everything from cultivation to processing.

Soon after arriving to the area, Asman decided that he wanted to switch from the status quo of collecting and processing wet-hulled coffee, to collecting cherry and processing as Washed, Honey, and Natural lots. We don’t often find this level of quality in Sumatran Naturals, so we are excited to have it in our lineup, and hope you get your hands on it before we drink it all.

Fruity and fairly clean for a Sumatra

First time I’ve tried a natural from Sumatra. Better at the lighter end for me. Not quite a fruit bomb, I would put this somewhere in the middle for a natural, in terms of fruity notes. I didn’t have much success taking this past City+ range, as I found the fruit drops off and roast bitterness takes over quickly. Possibly this is due to my roast method (small batch air roasts, which progress quickly). My better roasts were 1:00 to 1:30 development time and 11 – 13% weight loss. (By 14-15% loss, fruit was faint and started tasting like a regular Sumatra). Fruit was more obvious in the dry and wet grounds, but this had a nice fruity and sweet taste too. Some light roasts were tropical and juicy, another was more fruity and creamy, like strawberry milkshake or strawberry nesquik. Overall surprise is how clean it is for a Sumatra. It still had a little earthy character but not too strong, maybe like an oolong tea, or maybe a little dried straw. Also, the natural process is obvious but not over-the-top. I was expecting something overly fermenty or boozy for some reason, but this is a fairly balanced natural. The price would be high for most naturals from typical origins, but I suppose this is a bit of a novelty. Given the humidity of Sumatra, to pull off a natural like this probably took extra time, materials, and energy.

This is the most complex cup that I have found to date. The rumcake flavor comes through as a dominate note. I received this in my first mailing with my coffee subscription and was blown away with uniqueness and full flavor of this bean. It will be a great day when this bean becomes available again.
