Antonio Alfonso Angel is one of 8 brothers who inherited San Jose Buenos Aires from their father who purchased the farm over 60 years ago in Monte Cristo De Guerrero, Chiapas. This lot is only from the section that Antonio manages, but the 70 hectare farm is large enough to continue supporting the family, so many generations later. The farm recently had disease troubles, which forced them to uproot their coffee trees and replant. Because of this, the trees that contributed to this lot were only in their first harvest, with the trees just at three years old.
Antonio operates the farm with C.A.F.E. Practices certification, a certification that has high standards for quality, economic transparency, and social and environmental responsibility.
The coffee is depulped and fermented for 24 hours after being picked. Once the fermentation has finished, and the mucilage is removed, the coffee is sun dried on patios under the Chiapas sun.
We love coffees from Mexico for a number of reasons. It’s easy on the planet, being close by, there’s tons of Mexican culture in Southern California, and last but not least, they’re really tasty. This one arrived tasting sweet and full bodied, like Browned Butter, Nougat, and Caramel.
