Description: Mandheling coffees are named after the Mandailing people, an ethnic group from the Batak area of Sumatra, generally found in the North Province. This specific lot was grown in the mountains of Medan, a city in the North East of the island. Made up of Ateng, Garundang, and Catimor varieties, this lot was wet-hulled, and then completely sun dried. Screen size sorting was done after the coffee was hauled to remove any beans smaller than screen size 14. This lot is “double picked”, which is a classification within grade 1 coffees from Sumatra.

Unfortunately, I found the beans to be insect-damaged. The batch was so severely damaged I threw them all out. I understand that these things can happen, but I hope this feedback helps improve quality control.

First time Sumatra

Bought it because of the good reviews. Make the first trial batch of 200g, Charged at 210C, 1st crack at 7:36, very light sound,41% Browning, finished at 9:18 at 200C, with 18% Dev. However, the beans are very uneven in size and have a lot of defects, the reason for the 2 stars. Not too happy about it and don't see people commenting on it.
Will be back on the tasting part in a couple of days.

5 Roasts

I worked my way through 5lbs of Sumatra Mandheling beans over the past 2 weeks. My last roast on an Aillio Bullet used a pre-heat of 245C, reached yellow phase at 3:52m, and hit first crack at 6:37m. I dropped the beans at 8:30m and 205C. Dry phase was 45%, browning phase 32% and development was 22%. This fifth profile was perfect, so I just ordered another 5lbs. Wonderful!

Sumatra

Thought I would try something different than your great Costa Rican green beans, the Sumatra is almost as good 😉
